Before there were
fast shreddin guitar
players Les Paul
was playing with blinding speed.
And he did it
with a sense of humor.
Alot of what Les Paul did
was repetition.
The same riff but
slid down the neck.
Here is a riff you can work on:
p=pull off
h=hammer
E|–11h12p11h12–9h10p9h10–7h8p7h8–5h6p5h6–
B|——————————————–
G|——————————————–
D|——————————————–
A|——————————————–
E|——————————————–
It looks like a lot of notes
but it is just a simple
hammer and pull off twice
then drop down two frets.
Try it slow at first before moving frets.
get the basic hammer pull off hammer
before moving.
After a while you will get it and
see how simple it is.
You can go to the 3rd fret even.
Now try it by changing just one note.
Play the last note on the B string:
E|–11h12p11—–9h10p9—–7h8p7—-5h6p5—-
B|———-h12——–h10——-h8——-h6–
G|——————————————–
D|——————————————–
A|——————————————–
E|——————————————–
When you get it going fast it
sounds kind of cartoonish.
Have fun with that and make
up a few riffs on your
own by just changing
one note.

Its time we finally put those cell phones to a good cause. How I ended up in the emergency room.
I was in a lot of pain. But as I lay there I overheard some of the ER staff talking about the Earthquakes in Haiti. That is when it hit me that even though I was in the most pain I had felt
in a long time. I was surrounded by all the modern day luxuries.
I fell out of bed…. right onto my neck. It felt like I did some major damage so we called 911.
The Paramedics were there in 6 minutes. The Police and an ambulance arrived maybe 5 minutes later.
I had an entire team helping me into the Ambulance making sure I was comfortable and everything
was the way it should be.
I was then brought to the emergency room and put on a nice comfortable bed.
2 nurses helped me get comfortable and took my blood pressure.
After resting for 30 minutes they took an exray of my chest with
state of art equipment. After another 30 minutes. They took a Cat Scan.
And It was very painful to move. In total I would say 16 people were involved in my care.
Why do I bring this up. Well today as the pictures of the suffering in Haiti were on the TV
I realized just how lucky I was and how bad off the Haitians are.
There is massive suffering and death and destruction.
They need our help.
The average person won’t have anyone to help them.
There is no water, electricity, or other utilities.
Caregivers to those in need is probably 1 caregiver to 1,000 in need.
So this blog entry is for one thing to ask for donations for Haiti.
Les Paul is credited with inventing the electric Guitar.
Here is a Video biography with some great footage of him playing with Mary Ford.
I remember seeing him in 1975 or 1976 at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.
I will never forget his rendition of Some Where over the Rainbow. Les Use the Paulverizer which was a real time multi track recorder. He would record some chords and then a bass line and then play along with them. He was truly an amazing guitar player.
Around the same time he teamed up with Chet Atkins and recorded Chester and Lester.

Born in Wisconsin in 1915, Paul’s first musical forays were with the harmonica and banjo before he turned to guitar.
Dissatisfied with the acoustic guitars of the time, he began experimenting with electric models.
In 1941 he invented ‘The Log’ – a four-by-four solid piece of wood strung with steel strings.
‘I went into a nightclub and played it. Of course, everybody thought I was a nut,’ he recalled on early outings with the electric model.
After modifying the instrument’s shape to make it look more traditional, the guitar began to gain fans.
In 1952, Gibson Guitars began to produce the Les Paul guitar.
The Les Paul is the best selling guitar of All time.
